Finally I'm stepping on Argentinian soil.

Wow! The last 5 days I've been extremely tired that I had forgotten to update my blog. And when I say tired, I really mean TIRED. Not just: "Oh just give me a five minutes break and I'll be charged up like an Energizer Bunny" type of tired.

In the last five days, I've had my first really long flight, traveled to three countries - Qatar, Brazil and Argentina (although I do must admit that we were just in the airport or just staying in the plane), did a totally made up 'Malaysian Dance' (now it really reminds me of the things that we had to do in the pre-departure camp), and so many other things.

The flight to Argentina was really long. Alright, it was not really really long as the flight to USA would've been longer but hey, this is the first time I've ever been stuck in an airplane for more than 10 hours! In the airport in Malaysia, due to some 'baggage overweight' problem, I had to take out my 'dodol' and 'serunding' and some of my Malaysia pamphlets... I was kind of sad when I had to take them out because the first thing that I bought so that I can bring to Argentina was the 'dodol'. Sigh... Well, luckily I brought along like sooo many of those little wooden fans and they love it! I gave all the volunteers one each and to some of my primas (girl cousin) and mi abuela (grandmother) here.

In the orientation/survival camp, apparently each of the participant would have to perform something representing their country in a talent show. We had to do it in group according to countries or we can do it solo. Well, I didn't know that before... Anyway, we did in a group. The three girls from Malaysia which is me, Carwen and Tushaani choreograph this mixed dancing routine where we combine dances of the Malay, Indian and Chinese. It was a two minutes performance and we scored nine out of ten... Well, not bad considering that it was really last minute and that we basically had no idea what we were dancing...

I sucked at the camp. I wasn't communicating with the other participants. I don't know why I was like that. I really want to blame my tiredness but I know it's no excuse. But I really hope I will be better here in my host community.

The things that I notice in Argentina is that everyone loves dancing. Well, my host sister don't really like dancing but almost every Argentinian I met just dances when a song is played. In fact they have this thing called 'cumbio' and all the kids in my neighborhood know how to dance 'cumbio'. It's really huge among the kids in Palpala, where I'm being hosted.

I should post a video of it here soon.

My host family. They are really nice! We have three dogs that sometimes scare the hell out of me - they are really friendly dogs but I've never had any dogs nor can we find dogs in the place where I live back home so I'm still afraid of them. But they also have cats and oh I really love cats! Yesterday we had asado. It's like barbeque - Argentinian style! - as welcoming party for me. And this Friday is my host father's birthday so we are planning to watch the Star Wars in 3D that is playing in cinemas nowadays. Apparently my host father is a fan of action movies, sci-fi etc. And he's huge fan of Star Wars. The timing is perfect! And my host mother's birthday is just near the corner too so I will have to find something for her birthday present.

I'm starting school soon so I think there will be more that I will update. Until then, I hope I will pick up more Spanish so I can communicate more smoothly with my school firends.

See you!

Le Finale Week In Malaysia!

So finally I got my flight itinerary and I'm flying next week!!! Precisely on Wednesday where I'll be flying from KLIA to Doha and then to Buenos Aires. And boy it will be a long long flight from Doha to Buenos Aires. I Googled it just now and apparently the duration for the flight from Doha to Buenos Aires is about 17 hours! Oh My God! The flight from Malaysia to Doha is only around 7 and a half hour, which is bearable but I don't really know what will I do during the tiring 17 hours flight to BA!!!

And now, in the final week I'll be in Malaysia, I am still doing pretty much nothing except trying to pack my luggage and trying to learn how to cook at least any one popular dish of Malaysia... which is a proven disaster since I am terribly terrible in cooking... Sigh... I should have learnt cooking earlier... And I haven't even bought any present for my host family...

So the list below are the things that I'll be bringing with me to Argentina...
1. Baju Kurung (it's the traditional costume for Malay women)
2. Baju Kebaya (another variation of the costume but way modern and in my opinion much prettier)
3. This red cheongsam me mum bought for me during the last CNY... (I'm bringing Malaysia to Argentina so it's just as well that I should bring the traditional costumes of the three main races of Malaysia, right?)
4. A punjabi dress (since sari is too complicated to wear)
5. Just T-shirts and some blouse
6. Jeans
7. Winter coat
8. Souvenirs
9. Books (mostly religious books since I won't be able to find people who can guide me bout this as easily as in Malaysia... and some novels that I stored in PDF format - save space!)
10. Pictures!
11. Sos CILI!!! (that's chili sauce for you English Speaker!)
12. A small Latin American Spanish phrase book... and a Point-It book (thanks to Marina Uelsmann and Nikola Blaschke for the thoughtful present!)
13. And my head full of stories of Malaysia!!!
Alright, that's about it...

I'll update more later...

AFS Spring Gathering

The reason I made this blog was to jot down all the experiences I will be gaining through AFS year program... But what I've been writing these past few days had very little to do with things related to AFS... Well, at least this post will have something to do with AFS.

11th February, the YES Alumni had this little picnic at Sentul Park.
Fact One: Some Malaysian are always late... (I'm trying to avoid the stereotype thing here...)
Fact Two: I am a Malaysian.
Fact Three: We are Malaysian. (Although we were joined by a few students from Germany and USA)

Therefore, it's expected that when the picnic should start at 3:30, it actually means that it will start at 4:30... Oh well... I shouldn't have panicked when I arrived a little bit late than the stated time and saw nobody... Thank God Kamun, who was one of the volunteers volunteering for the camp I went to, came 5 minutes later. It was because of her arrival that I stopped wandering like a lost kid near the park... Well, I WAS a lost kid...

Then, some of the people from her batch came. And somehow we got lost in the middle of KL trying to lead someone from the KTM station, and finally got back to the park, sat down, opened our foods - I brought sushi^^, and FINALLY the picnic started... Or rather it already began before we even arrived - remember we got lost... Well, kind of...

We had an ice-breaking session and we had to introduce ourselves, kinda remind me of the first day of pre-departure camp, and played 'Jiggle Low'... << ermmm... I don't really know the real name of the game, it kind of sounds like that...

And then, people chatted, people ate, people played game, people took pictures, people laughed, people............

We ended our picnic by taking a group picture. Which is the picture below^^ (The pic wasn't mine, it was taken from one of the YES Alumni's Facebook page...)

nearing D DAY!!!

So last night, the chapter president from Jujuy e-mailed me. Okay so basically she told me via
e-mail that I might be departing to Argentina by 22nd February, or maybe latest by 24th
February... That's just like two weeks more left for me to be in Malaysia before flying to
Argentina! And I haven't even finished packing all my things yet.... What to do? What to do??

And I haven't collect enough chili sauce yet!!!!!!!

What? Chili sauce???

Kay, so I really can't live without chili sauce so I've been collecting those little packets of chili
sauce from McD lately. Don't laugh at me. I have been to a place where they don't have chili
sauce... Do you have any idea how much I suffered those two weeks???

Alright, so I really can't wait to be in Argentina although I will miss all the foods and all the
festivals we have here in Malaysia dearly...

muchos besos XOXO MaRiAnI
